Mammotion has unveiled its new LUBA 3 AWD model, demonstrating how rapidly the boundary between household appliances and autonomous transport is disappearing. The robot is equipped with a LiDAR system, computer vision technology and high-precision navigation capabilities.
The device creates a three-dimensional map of the property, identifies obstacles and adjusts its route in much the same way as modern autonomous vehicles. According to the manufacturer, it is capable of recognising hundreds of different types of objects, including animals, toys and landscape features.
Only a few years ago, technologies of this kind were available exclusively within major industrial projects costing millions of pounds or dollars. Today, they are becoming part of the mainstream consumer market.
For the industry, this represents an important signal. As the cost of sensors and computing power continues to decline, autonomous capabilities will begin to appear in an ever-growing range of household devices.
The practical conclusion is that the home robotics market is starting to adopt the same technological solutions used by the autonomous transport industry. The distinction between a robot operating in a garden and an autonomous vehicle is becoming increasingly difficult to identify.
