Lawnmowers Are Beginning to See the World

Swedish company Husqvarna has unveiled its new AI Vision system for robotic lawnmowers. At first glance, the announcement may appear to be just another update to household equipment, but behind it lies a far more significant technological shift.

Until recently, most lawn-care robots relied on predefined routes and boundary wires for navigation. The new systems use cameras and computer vision algorithms to analyse their surroundings in real time.

The lawnmower begins to understand where obstacles, animals, garden furniture and other objects are located. In effect, it gains a simplified version of the technologies used in autonomous vehicles.

Such solutions make it possible to eliminate part of the supporting infrastructure while significantly increasing the device’s autonomy. The robot becomes less dependent on initial setup and better able to adapt to changing environments.

The practical conclusion is that computer vision technologies are rapidly becoming more affordable and are beginning to enter mainstream consumer appliances. What only recently required the powerful computing systems of autonomous transport is now becoming available in a device designed for lawn maintenance.
