When people think about robotisation, most imagine Amazon warehouses or automotive assembly lines. Yet one of the most significant technological revolutions currently under way is unfolding across agricultural fields. French company Naïo Robotics and the European division of South Korean machinery manufacturer Kioti have announced a strategic partnership to develop autonomous agricultural machines.
What is happening goes far beyond the launch of another robot for farmers. European agriculture is facing several challenges simultaneously: shortages of seasonal workers, rising labour costs, environmental constraints and the need to improve production efficiency. Autonomous machinery is emerging as a response to all of these issues at once.
The new machines are capable of navigating fields independently and carrying out tasks such as weeding, soil cultivation and crop maintenance. Moreover, this is not a distant vision of the future. The companies expect to introduce their first commercial solutions within the next few years.
It is particularly noteworthy that robotisation is not being targeted solely at large-scale agricultural corporations. The developers are focusing on medium-sized farms, a market segment that has traditionally been considered too complex for technologies of this kind.
Agriculture is gradually becoming a high-technology industry in which the key resource is no longer the number of available workers but the quality of autonomous systems management. The farmer of the future will increasingly resemble the operator of a digital platform rather than someone working directly in the field.
